Our Commitment to Both People and Nature
Our Commitment to Both People and Nature
Since the announcement of our commitment to ECO-Friendly Management on a global scale in 2003, we have built a system that covers all aspects of its implementation from conceptualization to practice. Based on the great cause of "Respecting the present and future value of the environment and fulfilling our responsibility for economic development and environmental protection as a social and economic stakeholder who understands that the environment is one of the core values of business operations," we put environmental factors above all else when we set up strategy. We implement this approach in every part of our operations, from R&D to purchasing, logistics, production, sales and service.
In 2012, we formed a consultative body - GrEEN - that consists of environmental experts at the working level from our local entities around the world. Members of the body work together to identify specific actions required for each business area and make gradual improvements.
Our ECO-Friendly Management policy
We have 5 missions for ECO-Friendly management to fulfill our social responsibilities as a global leader.
ㆍBuild an enterprise system for environmental KPI management
ㆍBuild an information system on the global regulatory framework governing the environment
ㆍFind ways of shared growth for both our partners and ourselves
We have secured the organizational capability to achieve sustainability in every part of our operation, including R&D, purchasing & logistics, production, marketing and customer services, in order to ensure environmentally sound and sustainable development.
Values and vision
Climate change resulting from global warming is one the biggest challenges facing the international community at the start of the 21st Century. We face unusual weather events on a more regular basis, the breakout of epidemics and the extinction of species, all stemming from climate change. The sense of crisis arising from global warming calls on countries and businesses around the world to act to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Businesses should fulfill their social responsibility by supplying products that can improve the quality of life for the people on Earth and, at the same time, minimize their impact on the environment.
The proportion of CO2 emitted during production of a vehicle takes up only about 1 to 2 percent of the total emissions emitted throughout its life. A small ECO-Friendly improvement at the production site, however, can make a much greater difference than this small percentage may suggest. With production of over 2.5 million units per year, our efforts to reduce consumption of resources and increase recycling can exert a meaningful impact on the global depletion of resources. Our action to reduce the use of harmful substances and waste disposed or generated can also make a great difference in the environment of our local communities.
We strive to understand the meaning and impact of our improvements as we continue to raise the bar in terms of environmental standards.
Kia Motors endeavors to realize resource circulation in the automotive production process and reduce greenhouse gas emissions and environmental pollutants. In order to determine the actual results of such efforts and continue to raise efficiency, we tabulate the yearly resource input and product output, as well as the amount of waste materials and substances generated by our production process.
The current century’s global condition suggests that the entire world will transit towards resource circulation by reducing, reusing and recycling waste for the good of the environment. The circulation of resources refers to conversion of the flow consisting of production, consumption and disposal to one with recycling and heat recovery prior to final disposal. This is to improve the usability of resources and minimize environmental load. For resource circulation to be effective, we need to reduce the amount of raw material used in the production of products and enhance the efficiency of processes to generate less waste. In addition, a system is also required that allows waste to be recycled to further reduce the amount of waste finally generated.
We apply production technologies to minimize the use of resources and reduce the amount of materials used in production in the first place. We also take measures necessary to recycle as much waste as possible, particularly waste that would otherwise be landfilled or incinerated.
Resource circulation: illustration
Under the objective to make our production sites waste-free, we have reduced the level of waste materials taken to landfill at our three local plants (Sohari, Hwaseong and Gwangju) from 3.8 percent of total waste to 1.0 percent. The Sohari plant has already attained the 0 percent target. We received the Prime Minister Award in resource circulation assessment overseen by the Ministry of Environment in recognition of our active participation in the government’s waste reduction policy.
Kia Motors considers waste materials not as targets of disposal but as leftover resources. We continually and systematically upgrade the management of waste-generating sources and production processes. Our efforts to identify ways to recycle waste have started to bear fruit: our recycling rate rose from 91.5 percent in 2007 to 93.3 percent in 2013.
To raise economic value and improve environmental sustainability, Kia Motors set up a control system for harmful substances that serves as the foundation of our efforts to minimize the environmental impact of our production processes.
Indeed, all Kia Motors’ domestic and overseas worksites are ISO 14001-certified. Every year, certification authorities assess the level of our adherence to environmental laws and regulations and assess our pollution prevention efforts.
ECO-Friendly system cycle
Our ISO 14001 certifications
ㆍKia Motors proactively provides preemptive environmental solutions through preliminary internal evaluations before the enactment of new legislation or amendments to existing environmental regulations.
ㆍThe countermeasures are posted on the regulation information section of i-ESH to inform employees.
ㆍKia Motors sets stricter internal criteria for managing environmental polluting materials than federal regulations.
ㆍAll of our worksites have entered into an agreement on self-regulated ECO-Friendly Management and we have been named as an ECO-Friendly company by the Ministry of Environment.
ㆍKia Motors has run its own environmental audit to ensure its compliance with the requirements for ISO 14001 since 2004.
ㆍOur 85 functional departments including our three plants, service centers and the Seosan plant are subject to an audit to determine the level of improvement made by energy source and the level of waste reduced.
ㆍDepartments that have seen all of their members working together to make the necessary improvements and contributing to the furthering of our ECO-Friendly system are rewarded.
ㆍAny non-compliance identified during the audit is remedied according to a set plan.
